The tensioner leak down is caused by poor oil maintenance & subsequent tensioner wear. Therefore, particularly attentive oil maintenance will support longer tensioner & guide life. My '06 3.2 C6 (w/162k miles) has a steady 7.5 degrees of deviation on it's driver's side cam bank & half that on the passenger side.

There are three 5mm allen bolts holding the muffler on. Remove the lower timing cover. The bolts for the lower timing cover are T30 torx bolts. Pry the cover off with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the oil pump chain. Retract the tensioning guide and lock with T40011. Remove the T30 bolt holding the guide on.
A timing chain service is not in the 2013 maintenance schedule . You are correct, despite what a few clueless people have been spouting and fear mongering on this sub, the 3.0T is an extremely reliable engine. It will undoubtedly go down as one of the best engines Audi has ever made, a future classic in the eyes of many.

It was indeed the timing chain tensioner. Replacement part was different than the original, indicating to me that the original is a faulty design. If you do a search of all forums on "timing chain tensioner" you'll find that this is a recurrent problem on the 1.8T since as early as '96. In my view, Audi should issue a recall.
